monitor student behavior
I will monitor behavior every day when I complete the star chart for the students. I will be documenting whether or not the student follows directions and acted appropriately each day.
If I begin to notice a lack of stars for a student, I follow a 7-step plan presented by the experts who wrote the "Positive Behavioral Supports for the Classroom." In order to determine what interventions could be put in place to increase the desired behavior.

If I begin to notice a lack of stars for a student, I follow a 7-step plan presented by the experts who wrote the "Positive Behavioral Supports for the Classroom." In order to determine what interventions could be put in place to increase the desired behavior.
The 7-step Plan:
- Step 1: Define the target behavior
- Example: Hitting or pushing
- Step 2: Choose Behavior Measurement System
- Event recording
- Measures behavior that has a clear beginning and end
- Interval recording
- Measure continuous or high frequency behaviors
- Duration recording
- Measures how long the behavior lasts
- Latency recording
- Measures how long it takes for the behavior to begin
- Permanent product recording
- Provide tangible evidence that the behavior occurred
- Example: The student did not turn in assignment as a result of noncompliance
- Provide tangible evidence that the behavior occurred
- Event recording
- Step 3: Determine the data collection periods
- Step 4: Collect baseline data first (data collected before beginning the intervention) then collect intervention data
- Step 5: Convert Data if Necessary
Respond to inapropriate behavior
When presented with an inappropriate behavior I will use researched-based intervention to reduce undesirable behaviors. I have listed some of these strategies below.
- Differential Reinforce of Incompatible Behavior (DRI)
- Reinforce appropriate behavior that is incompatible with the inappropriate behavior.
- When students follow the classroom rules they will earn a star for using appropriate behavior.
- Differential Reinforce of Lower Levels of Behavior (DRL)
- I will use this intervention to reinforce the absence of the behavior.
Document student behavior
I will document student behavior each day when I fill out the "star chart". I will collect data on students that have exhibited inappropriate behavior. Finally, I will document incidents that occur using the system/form that my district provides.
Self-Management Strategies
Self- Monitoring
Target Behavior: Staying on-task (working quietly, distraction free)
I will use this strategy to keep students on-task and focused. Students will have a checklist of items that they must complete when they enter my classroom. I will have students check off each box as they complete the task. If necessary I will provide visual or verbal cues to remind students to fill out the checklist.
Goal Setting
Target Behavior: Appropriate Behavior
For students that exhibit challenging behaviors, we will work together to set a goal. The student will think of ways that they will reach this goal. I will monitor these goals to see how the students are progressing.
