Over the course of this semester, my classroom management skills have developed and evolved. I have witnessed many different ways to manage a classroom from my field experiences. I have been able to put these new strategies into practice while teaching my lessons. There are so many take-aways that I have from this course and several things that I am interested in learning more about.
At the beginning of the semester, classroom management was one of the areas, in teaching, that I had the least amount of confidence. After taking this class and creating this website, I feel prepared to implement my classroom management plan. I have grown in my knowledge of behavior, reinforcement and resources that I will use in my classroom. I have discovered the importance of using evidence-based strategies that have been proven to work in the classroom setting. Also, I have witnessed the impact that one's classroom management can have on student learning.
During this semester, I have been very conscious of the types of classroom management that are used in my field placements. I have started to put some of the strategies we have learned in class into practice. For example, stating the desired behavior in a kind way. Instead of saying, "no, pay attention, stop" I would redirect the student. For example, when a student is interrupting I would say "thank you for your ideas, but it is my turn to talk so turn your listening ears on. " I have used the PBIS approach in my classroom. For instance, in my kindergarten resource room I ask my students three questions, if they answer yes to all the questions they earn a star. This serves as positive reinforcement for the students.
After reflecting on everything that I have learned while creating this website and taking ED 356 Classroom Management I have two big take aways. First, I have discovered the importance of developing a positive relationship with each student. In order for students to feel safe in a classroom, the teacher needs to show the students that he/she is there for them by encouraging the students to be the best they can be and holding the students accountable. Secondly, I have learned the power of positive/ negative reinforcement. This is an evidence-based practice that is useful in many aspects of teaching. It promotes a positive classroom environment that holds students accountable. As I start to teach I need to learn how to adapt my expectations to the students abilities. I will need to continue to develop strategies that work for me and the students that I am teaching. I will have to find what motivates the students so that I can push them to be the best that they can be everyday!
